2008 Annual Meeting and Reunion
With great pleasure we announce that the 2008 Carter Society annual meeting
and reunion will be held in Charlottesville, Virginia, the weekend of September
12 to 14, 2008. This is a change from our usual meeting in June, which found
us in unbearably hot weather in Tidewater Virginia!
The welcoming reception will begin at 5 pm on Friday, at the historic home of
Lloyd and Ashlin Smith. Bring copies of family trees and pictures to share
with others. Hors d'oeuvres and cocktails will be served.
Saturday will feature a day-long trip in an air conditioned touring bus to three
sites not usually opened to the public: Round Top (1836) home of Benjamin Franklin
Randolph and wife Sarah Champe Carter, the exquisite 1798 home of Robert Carter
and Polly Coles, and after a lunch at the Historic Mitchie Tavern (1770's), we will
visit Bleinham and the Bleinham Winery, site of Edward Carter's original home
which burned circa 1840.
Dr. K. Edward Lay, author and senior faculty at the University of Virginia's School
of Architecture, will guide this Saturday tour of historic homes.
The annual general membership meeting will be back at the Comfort Inn at 5 pm,
with dinner served at the Ivy Inn at 8 pm. New Officers for the 2008-2010 term
will be introduced at the 8 am Sunday breakfast at the Comfort Inn, which will be
followed by a talk by Edmund Berkeley on the Extant Robert King Carter Papers
found on his website at the Unversity of Virginia. Mr. Berkeley was the former
Director of the Aldermann Library Special Collections at the University.
Dr. Lay will then lead a tour of the historic University of Virginia Grounds, which
were designed by Thomas Jefferson, who also oversaw its construction.
